Sylvia’s Story of Rediscovering Her Passion at Floryn House

resident with flower arranging expert

When Sylvia joined us at Floryn House Care Home to receive residential care in June 2025, she brought with her a lifetime of creativity and a deep love for flower arranging. At 81, Sylvia had spent many years creating beautiful floral displays alongside her sister for local churches and schools and it was something that gave her a strong sense of purpose and enjoyment.

As her mobility became more limited, Sylvia found it increasingly difficult to continue with this much-loved hobby. Over time, this loss began to affect her confidence and she often spoke to our team about how much she missed arranging flowers.

Bringing Back Joy Through Meaningful Activities

At Floryn House, understanding what matters most to each resident is at the heart of everything we do. We have a wishing tree downstairs in our home where at any time, residents can add activities or changes they wish to experience. When Sylvia shared her wish of returning to flower arranging, we were determined to make it possible. Our activities coordinator went away and arranged a professional from Flowers DBS to deliver a bespoke workshop at our home.

From the very first session in October 2025, the impact was immediate. As Sylvia began to handle the flowers, select colours and create her arrangements, her confidence and happiness shone through. It was a truly special moment to see her reconnect with a passion that had once meant so much to her.

Charlotte, our Activities Manager, reflected on this experience:

Seeing Sylvia’s passion come back to her so naturally was truly something special.

The success of that first workshop led to regular monthly sessions, which Sylvia now looks forward to with great enthusiasm. She not only takes part but has become a source of encouragement for others, gently supporting fellow residents as they explore their own creativity.

Steve from FLOWERS DBS shared: "It was my honour to be the person making this wish come true. There are Fairy Godfathers out there as well. Sylvia loved the workshop from the start and has continued to attend my flower workshops. It's a real pleasure to see Sylvia every month, enjoying herself, getting ever more confident in her designs."

Since rediscovering her passion, Sylvia has become much more engaged in all aspects of life at Floryn House. She now keeps a diary of upcoming activities, enjoys talking to other residents about what is planned and embraces opportunities to socialise and take part in the community. The confidence she gained from that first workshop has had a lasting impact on her overall well-being and quality of life.
